Climate Refugees
While some still doubt climate change and others are looking for solutions within the system, more and more people in other parts of the planet are fleeing the consequences of climate change. By 2015, there were over 20 million climate refugees. By 2050 it could be between 200 million and a billion. These people have no right to asylum under the Geneva Convention. They have no rights and no protection. If climate change becomes an increasingly important reason for flight, what does that mean for the promise to eliminate the causes of flight? Is climate policy also migration policy?
Before the panel, we´ll show the documentary A Climate For Conflict (US/SO, 2017, 15 min). This is the film´s Austrian premiere.
